Forres – Ancient, Royal burgh

Welcome to the Forres Heritage Trust Website

The ancient and Royal burgh of Forres sits on the shoulder of Cluny Hill, facing out over Findhorn Bay and the Moray Firth.   It delights its inhabitants and visitors.   Whether you are looking for relaxation with sea and sand, woods and hills, parks and gardens, fine food or history and culture,   Forres offers something for everyone..

Forres Tolbooth

In particular, the Forres Heritage Trust would encourage you to visit Nelson’s Tower.   You will spot this landmark, standing high on Cluny Hill just south of the town’s main street, as you approach Forres.

You can learn much about it from this website but to get the full benefit you will need to climb the spiral staircase, visit the intermediate rooms and then take advantage of the castellated viewing area to see the magnificent panorama out over Forres, Moray, the Moray Firth and northwards to Caithness and Sutherland.

Nelson’s Tower

Nelson’s Tower is now open for the season.

It is open everyday from 2pm till 4pm. Entry is by donation and we accept cards or cash.

You’ll know the Tower is open if you see the Red Ensign is flying from the flagpole. Even if the tower is closed, there is a lovely view of Findhorn Bay and the Moray Firth from the foot of the tower and the walk through the woods is full of interest. You may even spot a dragon!

Forres Tolbooth

Tolbooth tours are available everyday from 10am till 3pm until the end of September. To book a tour email: FHTTolboothTours@outlook.com

The Forres Tolbooth is prominent in the town centre and has an important history.  The impressive courtroom has been restored, as have the police station and a number of cells in the jail.  In addition, access to the Tolbooth tower platform has been restructured and gives great views over the  town.
